Program Details

Nestled in the foothills of the majestic Atlas Mountains, Ouarzazate has long attracted travelers looking for beauty, culture and history. Often called the “Door of the Desert”, this charming oasis city makes for a wonderful day trip destination from Marrakech thanks to its strategic location just a few hours’ drive away.

An ideal itinerary would be to leave Marrakech in the early morning to maximize time exploring Ouarzazate. Your first stop upon arriving in the city should be the impressive kasbah – a kasbah is a type of fortress and this 17th century kasbah is a splendid example of traditional Saharan architecture. Wander through the courtyard, admire the intricate plaster detailing and shop for handicrafts in the souks.

Next, drive approximately 30km southeast to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou. This striking fortified city, once an important stop for caravans travelling between the Sahara and Marrakech, gives visitors a glimpse of how kasbah towns functioned in the past with its towering pisé walls and maze of narrow streets. Stunningly preserved, its grand walls tower over the scenic Ounilla Valley below. Spend an hour exploring the maze-like alleys and taking in panoramic views.

Have a relaxed lunch at one of the Berber-style restaurants located just in the same village, . After lunch, head back to Ouarzazate allowing time to browse the Souk el Had, an 800-year-old market renowned for leatherwork and carpets. With dramatic mountains as the backdrop, this souk adds to the exotic North African ambiance of the town.

Arrive back in Marrakech in the late afternoon, having experienced the romance of the Southern Oasis Valley and gained valuable insights into Moroccan history and culture through its well-preserved kasbahs. This makes for a very full yet relaxed day trip from the Red City, ideal for all ages and interests.
